Warm vs. Cool Challenge- Creativity Inspired by Color Families
This week you will create a colored Homework Challenge using whatever media you are most comfortable with....colored pencils, markers, paint.....COLOR!!!
As you can see from the slideshow, Warm colors come out of the paper towards the viewer and Cool colors seem to go back into the paper.
You will create a design that incorporates warm colors vs. cool colors.
You may decide to create a scene that emphasizes one object from a group by making it warm versus a cool background.......

To get full credit for this challenge the artist should:
- Correctly demonstrate Warm Colors vs Cool Colors. (It should be evident that you understand which colors belong to which color family.)
- The design covers the entire page.
- The design demonstrates creativity. The design does not closely follow examples from the internet or from fellow classmates. Push yourself to come up with your own design!!!
- Design illustrates control of medium. Craftsmanship and precision with coloring tools demonstrates a high level of effort. At least 3 hours of creation time from planning to completion should be clearly evident.
Minions Challenge- Creativity inspired by a Movie
As you watch this trailer, list all of the tasks you see the minions doing for their Master.
For this challenge you will imagine what you would do if you had a league of Minions for a week.
Next to your notes from watching the video, list at least five tasks you would order your Minions to complete.
Next, design your own Minion. Your minion will be a creature of your own making, NOT a yellow oval with one or two eyes and overalls. Invent a totally new league of Minions to call your own (robots, animals, monsters, you name it.)
To earn full points for this challenge, the artist will:
1. Create a scene that illustrates a brand new species of minions carrying out a deed for their master.
2. Create a scene that fills the page.
3. Create a scene that shows depth through overlapping and 'large to small'.
4. Demonstrate at least three hours of effort from planning to completion with superior craftsmanship.

Spooky Story Challenge- Creativity inspired from a prompt...and a holiday :)
First, choose one of the spooky story prompts (or create your own, but remember it would only be a couple of sentences to start the story, not the whole story.)
Second, your illustration will be a scene from the story you have chosen. Yep, you’ll have to think about what happens next and how it will end before you start your design.
Third, to get full credit for this challenge you will need to successfully accomplish four things:
1. Neatly write your story starter on the bottom of your illustration. It
should only go 1-1 1/2 inches up from the bottom of your page. No
more than that, your page should be filled with your scene, not your
sentences. (Do this first!).
2. Picture illustrates a scene that might happen anytime throughout
the story.
3. Design demonstrates creativity. There are 30+ artists that are
getting the exact same prompts as you are. How will you make
yours different than everyone else? The artist pushed to go beyond
the first basic idea….the easy way to complete the story and the
easy way to illustrate it. The design fills the page and is detailed. It
stands apart (is different) from the other designs in the room.
4. Illustration demonstrates at least three hours worth of time and
effort and uses the entire page. Push your craftsmanship and
attention to detail! It does not need to be colored if the details
make up for it.
REMINDER: Artwork that demonstrates a high level of craftsmanship and creativity will be displayed in the school. In order to be posted, please remember the environment in which it will displayed. One of your biggest challenges may be to create a spooky scene AND still keep it appropriate.

Mechanical- Creativity from Combining Objects.
![Picture](/uploads/7/3/6/1/7361464/6254721-1-orig.jpg?250)
You are an inventor, a mad scientist, determined to create a new lifeform. One that will be both mechanical and living.
For this assignment, you are asked to combine a machine and an animal that share a common characteristic. For example, in the student work below, created by S. Sey.... in 2008, a turtle is combined with a tank because they both share the characteristic of a hard shell used to protect those within.

In class we discussed the page below in order to help with brainstorming for ideas and making sure everyone understood the concept.

You may make this artwork 2 dimensional or 3 dimensional.
Here is a site that may be helpful to you:

I Can't Imagine Challenge-Creativity Inspired by your favorites.
Assignment inspired by musingsfromthemiddleschool.blogspot.com
1. On a piece of computer paper, draw a cloud in the middle of the page and draw lines that connect from the cloud to the edge of the paper all the way around. See example above.
2. In the middle of the cloud, write,"I Can't Imagine Life Without"
3. In each of the 'rays' that come out of the cloud, you need to fill in one thing that you cannot imagine living without. You should end up with at least 15 rays with one item/idea in each.
Use the list for inspiration for a design.
To get full credit for this Challenge, the artist should:
1. Turn in the "I Can't Imagine" paper with the design.
2. Create a design that includes at least five of the items/ideas from the cloud paper in some way. The favorites can be included in a scene of some sort or a collage type of design. However, the artist SHOULD NOT merely draw a symbol for each and list the images on the page. The images/symbols/objects for each favorite has to work together with the others to create an interesting design.
3. Create a design that illustrates originality. How can you push yourself beyond your first basic idea?
2. Create a design that fills the page.
3. Demonstrate craftsmanship that illustrates at least 3 hours worth of focused effort from idea phase to completion.
