Use this extended time at home to have ALL assignments in Skyward caught up (#'s 1-4 on the Things to Do list).
Use Photopea.com. It is VERY close to Photoshop. If you are not sure how to do a Photoshop step in Photopea, GOOGLE IT.....or email me :)
If you need reminders as to how to do an assignment, scroll down the agendas on this site to find the instruction links or tutorials. If you get stuck or have any questions, email me :)
WHEN YOU COMPLETE AN ASSIGNMENT, EMAIL ME AND I WILL LOOK AT YOUR FOLDER TO GET YOUR POINTS INTO SKYWARD AND CAUGHT UP!
Save any assignments finished in Photopea.com as a psd file and then upload it to your folder for this class. This way I will be able to look at your layers.

Bellwork: Title your entry, "Levels vs Curves" Watch the tutorial on this link.
We've used the Levels adjustment layer to correct tone and color.....but not Curves. After watching the tutorial, you should be able to see the difference and when you might pick one over the other.
Answer the questions below in your entry:
What is one main difference between Levels and Curves?
What is the "S" curve?
Choose an image a place a Curves adjustment layer on it. Experiment with the panel as you saw in the video. Show me for credit so I can see the layers then screenshot it and paste it into your journal. SHOW ME FOR CREDIT!

Post your Gradient Mesh jpeg on your weebly site. Post the original photo you used too! For your artist statement, explain the following:
EXPLANATION OF NEXT PROJECT
Double Exposure Project- Uses your own image for the main subject. Take a picture of a person or animal to use as one of your pictures, a head and shoulders shot with a simple, light background is preferred.
Successful Student Examples
Post your Gradient Mesh jpeg on your weebly site. Post the original photo you used too! For your artist statement, explain the following:
- Briefly explain what the Gradient Mesh process is (how is it done?)
- What is your comfort level with this technique? (Still learning, comfortable to use in a basic way, expert level)
- Do you recommend using this technique? Why or why not?
- If anything, what about this piece would you like to go back and redo? What would you change?
- What about this piece makes you proud?
EXPLANATION OF NEXT PROJECT
Double Exposure Project- Uses your own image for the main subject. Take a picture of a person or animal to use as one of your pictures, a head and shoulders shot with a simple, light background is preferred.
- You can use web images for the overlays (At least one, but you could use more.) There is a connection between the 'model' and the subject matter of the overlays.
- Adjustment layers (specifically Black and White and Levels, but you could use others) to 'sync' the photos color wise. Blend modes are used to combine the pictures.
- Modification of the pictures with Adjustment Layers and Layers masks are done in such a way that the pictures blend seamlessly AND the important features of each are still visible.
- Images are modified and/or masked in such a way that there is a seamless transition with the background in at least one area (background and foreground merge)

NEW ASSIGNMENT!
Watch the Adjustment layer review tutorials: Some review/reminders about shortcuts and techniques along with new information on each type of layer described (Black and White, Hue and Saturation, Brightness and Contrast, Vibrance) and which you'll be asked to use in the next assignment. You can skip through saving methods as we WILL ALWAYS USE AN ADJUSTMENT LAYER and not Image>Adjustments
4 Tutorials- Adjustment Layer Videos Link
TIP: While it is not mentioned in the videos, do not forget the 'clipping mask' option to attach an adjustment layer solely to the layer directly below it.
Adjustment Layer assignment (2 different designs using different adjustment layers for each):
1. Open 2 jpegs in Photoshop (Each in their own file.) Let's review
what to look for and do when choosing a photo....
your liking. At least one of the four should be the Black and White
Adjustment layer. You can use more than two if you'd like.
3. Use the layer masks within the Adjustment Layers to choose
specific areas of the jpeg to modify.
4. Change the Blend Mode of at least one layer per image.
5. Push your creativity and artistic eye to create something interesting.
This should take at least one class period.
I want to see the .psd files on this one. Call me over for credit when you are done.

Explain why we use a layer mask to take away parts of a jpeg instead of the eraser.
If you are done with the Perspective Grid Project, both the .ai AND the jpeg should be in your folder. If you download a font, make sure you 'create outlines' around such font first so that I can see it as you intended. Otherwise my computer won't read it as such.

- Choose any two jpegs (They should be 'related' in some way for unity.) Use a layer mask to create a slow transition somewhere between the two layers. (See examples on 2/25/20) It could be within one object, person, or animal or within the background. To receive full credit for this assignment, you need to demonstrate your ability to seamlessly combine two jpegs in some way, in a polished, artistic way. You will also need to upload both the jpeg and the .psd file (so I can look at your individual layers) to your Google Folder. While I am specifically looking at this as review for the layer mask, feel free to use adjustment layers as well to unify the colors of each jpeg so that it looks as one.

What is the keyboard shortcut to bring up the bounding box around an image so that it can be resized or 'transformed'? If you can't remember, open Photoshop and look in the Edit Menu.
Creation Time! As you create, keep the Design Checklist in mind.
DESIGN CHECKLIST
_________ Architecture is an original design and creative. Push yourself to go beyond the basic!
_________ Design is detailed. Buildings include details like windows, doors, decorative embellishments, etc.
Surface textures are taken into consideration. Shiny surfaces show reflections/glares.
Transparent surfaces reveal objects within/below with layers/opacity etc.
_________ Details and added objects are designed in a 3D manner to keep the form unified.
_________ Perspective is unified throughout the design. Added details on the buildings and in the
surrounding areas all follow the same perspective.
_________ Architecture fills the artboard. It can be a single building or multiple, but it should fill a majority of
the artboard allowing, of course, for space to include the surrounding environment. Keep it
balanced.
_________ Architecture should have more than one story/flight.
_________ Values on architecture, including all added details, demonstrate a light source and shadow
application that is consistent throughout the design. (Gradients/Fade to, Opacity
or Blend Modes (Screen, Multiply, Overlay) -found in Transparency Panel)

Bellwork: Title the entry, "Perspective Grid Issues?"
What problems, if any, are you having with the Perspective Grid? If you are not having any, type "smooth sailing" for your answer :)

Bellwork: Title your Entry "Text in Perspective"
You want to add text to the perspective grid in Illustrator. You've typed out the text with the type tool and use the selection tool (black arrow) to move it onto the grid. However, it stays flat. It does not snap to the perspective grid. What did you forget to do?
Check Skyward! I have points in for everything I have seen. Zeroes go in on TODAY for any asterisks.

Last PRINT FOLDER of the semester. This will close and be sent at the end of the day. Please RENAME the jpeg as your Last Name, First Name so that I can get it to you even if it is not ready by your exam day. Prints will be 8 x 10's.
Congratulations to the artists that had work awarded through Scholastic!!
Thank you to everyone that participated! There were limited amounts of awards and we made it really hard for them to choose :)
Many of you are missing exam folders with Reflection Docs inside. I will announce who I have. THIS IS YOUR TURN IN TRAY FOR THE EXAM. You really want to make sure this is right.
Reminder for Exam Print Ad Design:

- Product is inspired by word list. (Can be something invented from your imagination! Does not have to be a current product bought and sold on the market.
- Product name uses at least 1 word from the Random site list.
- Product details are included in the advertisement.
- Description-What is the product used for/what does it do?
- Price- How much does it cost?

Bellwork: Title your entry, "Blending Gradient Mesh Edges Tip"
To make your Gradient Mesh project look as realistic as possible, you'll want to blend the seams of each mesh object seamlessly. Copy and paste the tip below into your journal
To seamlessly blend the edges of Mesh Objects that are used to make one object, select a mesh anchor from one edge of the object then sample the color of the edge of the OTHER object that is closest to it.
Trying the tip above PLUS overlapping mesh objects may also help to blend the edges enough to hide them. That is the goal!
Things to do: (O's go in for 1-7 this weekend! Check Skyward to see what is missing.)

Bellwork: Title your entry, "Added Details"
Look closely at the images below. The lava lamp was made in Illustrator with Gradient Mesh. The close up is an example of adding details ON TOP of a mesh by creating a new layer. The artist deliberately wanted the mesh to shine through as well so she used a blend mode in the Transparency panel.
In your entry, explain where in your gradient mesh design, can you add details ON TOP of the mesh (blended or not) in order to make it as realistic as possible?
NOTE: not all meshes will need added details, but most should.

Copy and paste the following tip into your journal:
After you have created your basic shape and modified it to fit a section of your design as close as you can with the anchors that came with the basic shape, DON'T ADD ANCHORS TO MODIFY IT FURTHER!! YOU'LL GET TANGLE MESHES. Instead add meshes to your slightly modified basic shape and then adjust those anchors with your direct selection tool to perfect the shape!

Bellwork-Blog Post: Independent Project (Scholastics)
Post the JPEG of your independent project. You may want to post the RGB version for best quality on the screen.
In your blog post explain the following:
Side note: The Independent blog post is considered your Wrap Up. Make sure it is a complete entry with sources for the tutorials (all original pictures should be in your Google folder or in a Google Doc.)
Here it is!!! The Mesh Gradient Project....recreating an image in hyper photorealism. This is a early roll out as some of you need to finish up past assignments but it won't take much time for you to finish Gradient Mesh 1-3 and I want you to be able to roll right into this one. PLUS, it will give you a chance to think of pictures to take OR what object you'll image search.
Here is the file explaining this project....pay close attention to the first page. When searching for an image to use OR thinking of your own picture to take, think of these important points:

In your blog post explain the following:
- What is the theme or message for your design?
- What clues (colors, textures, objects) did you use for symbolism to help illustrate this message?
- What is the new technique/effect you learned/used in this design? Provide any url addresses for tutorials you used.
- What issues did you have and how did you solve them OR what tips can you offer other students in working with this effect that would make their experience easier?

- images that show a wide range of values with gradations
- an object is easier than a living thing
- make it a close up shot so you can make out the details!

Finish and upload your Independent Project as soon as it is completed ALONG with any other works you plan to submit, the more you submit, the better chance you have :)
Your jpegs you submit may be too big and need to be put into Photoshop to be scaled down in 'Image Size'. See Scholastic instructions for details.
You will need to print the pdf and waiver form (if needed) AND have it signed and returned by FRIDAY!!!
I will walk through the uploading process tomorrow with first year, but if you are ready now, call me over.

No Bellwork today! Get started right away!
We HAVE to have our designs uploaded, forms signed by parents, and ready to go BEFORE you leave for break. While your current independent project is meant to be one submission, you may have some from prior years you'd like to submit. If you think they fit the criteria outlined in the video on Wednesday, we can talk about entering in more than one piece. (Surrealism from last year? Representational design? Menu? Fast 50 flyer? Texture Overlay? Typography?)
To get a head start on the process, you may want to go to the Online Registration Site to create an account and get all of your information entered.

No Bellwork today! Get started right away!
I am an email away if you have questions or finish an assignment. Ask each other for help if you get stuck too!
Reminder and tip: "Wrap up for sources"
If you are using Google images for your Scholastic Independent Project, you will have to upload the url addresses when you upload your design. If you have not already, create a Google Doc. Name it 'Independent Project Wrapup' and copy any and all images AND their url addresses to that file. It will make your entry application easier and quicker to complete.

For your entry, describe your idea for your Independent Project to be used for one of your Scholastic entries by answering the following:
What is the theme, story, message, or mood for your project?
What makes your design unique and special to you as an artist?
Today I will come around to have personal conferences with each of you to discuss your Independent Project plan.

Bellwork: Title your entry, "Scholastic Reminders"
Copy and Paste the descriptions below into your journal THEN READ IT!!!
ORIGINALITY - Work that challenges conventions, blurs the boundaries between genres, and shifts notions of how a particular concept or emotion can be expressed. Jurors are encouraged to look for works of art that surprise them and leave a lasting impression
PERSONAL VISION - Work with an authentic and unique point of view and style.
.
TECHNICAL SKILL - Work that uses a technique to advance an original perspective or a personal vision, and show skills being utilized to create something unique, powerful, and innovative. Exhibition of technical skill alone should not be rewarded unless it’s exercised in the service of expressing an idea that is unique, powerful, and innovative and helps to highlight the artist’s vision.
Above is the 2018 artwork awarded National Medals in the Michigan Thumb Art Region.

Congratulations to Nick (1st place) and Gabby (Runner Up) for being chosen by our Superintendent and his team. Please see me for next steps. (Recognized at School Board Meeting Dec. 16th) Nick, your design will be seen by thousands! Well done!
For all that participated, you should know that the team had a very difficult time choosing their top design. They just couldn't agree with all the high quality designs. You should all be very proud of what you created! I am! This was the best batch I've ever sent! Thank you!

Bellwork: Title your entry, "Brainstorming ideas"
After bellwork and when I am done with DD1 students, I will explain your next project. It is described below. BUT FIRST, let's get your creative juices flowing by answering some questions in your bellwork. Copy and paste the questions below into your journal and complete them to the best of your ability. We will be sharing your ideas as a group.
NEW ASSIGNMENT! Independent design (12/2/19)- This is a required project designed and created by you with the hopes of entering it into Scholastics in January (Due before Christmas break)
Your next project is going to be something designed by YOU! My requirements are that it:
Once you have an idea, have a personal conference with me before starting. I want to make sure you are challenging yourself as well as keeping all of the requirements in mind. I will be checking in on your progress periodically.

- Name a problem you have seen in our school, our city, our state, our country? (Yep, shoot for four different problems.)
- Name a problem that is a world-wide issue?
- Name a book, fairy tale, or movie that you could give a twist. For example, what if King Kong was a bunny instead OR what if the pigs stalked the wolf instead? Name the story AND the twist.
- What lyric or poem could you turn into an illustration?

Your next project is going to be something designed by YOU! My requirements are that it:
- Has a strong message/theme. A strong theme tied with a well designed piece pulls the audience into the picture, makes them want to know more, or leaves them thinking.
-
Look here and here and here to help inspire some ideas. You may decide to create more than one piece based on this theme, a concentration of pieces. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO CHOOSE SOMETHING FROM THESE LISTS! USE THEM AS EXAMPLES OF STRONG THEMES AND/OR A KICKSTART TO YOUR OWN IDEA. - You can use either Illustrator or Photoshop or both.
- Uses design principles to make an eye-catching, successful design (Unity, Balance, Contrast, Emphasis)
- Uses a new technique that we have not covered in class discovered by your own research or from the Photo Effects folder. (Find a tutorial that teaches a new technique, not an entire design!-keep the url source for your wrap up)

Get started right away!
If you are not spending extra lab time in here, you have TWO HOURS LEFT in order to have your design included in the vote.
The gif has to be placed in a folder I will share with you by the end of the hour tomorrow! You should be close, if not, already animating in Photoshop by now.
Good luck!
Check the bottom of your planning page for new links. I've added how to animate snow, how to blink lights, AND how to add music :)
Things to do: (everything else is on hold right now.) 3 days left!

STOP WHAT YOU ARE WORKING ON! WE HAVE BEEN SELECTED TO CREATE THE DISTRICT'S CHRISTMAS CARD AND WE DON'T HAVE A LOT OF TIME BEFORE THE DEADLINE IS HERE!
Read the Christmas Card Planning Page and start your research/brainstorming. Start exploring the links ESPECIALLY how to animate as it is one of the requirements.
I will discuss when first year students are independently working.
Examples below from 2015 and 2017 are the top 5 finalists from each year as selected by their classmates. 5 will be sent to the school board and administration for selection.
(In both years, DD1 students did this contest. These do not include animation, however, as it is a new requirement. You can see how some used tutorial techniques to create their designs. Some were more successful than others in making the design their own. Notice the sense of depth through overlapping and sense of light source/shadows.)

Congratulations Taylor on having your logo chosen for the Project Lead The Way Biomedical Logo Contest! Your logo will now be mass produced for the white coat name badges for the Biomedical class! Woohoo!!!
You have two choices to get credit today for any 'baby' assignments:
As you work today, stay focused and get as far as you can. Hopefully you are close to finishing your project by now. If not, kick it into high gear.
Gradient Mesh assignments have been posted in order to get familiar with this process again before the next project. (Zeros go in for Gradient Mesh 1-3 next Friday the 8th.)
If you get stuck, ask for help! You have fellow 2nd year (or Jacob, you have Myles) colleagues to assist you.
Otherwise, I am accessible all day through email (I have the app on my phone and my phone is permanently attached to me so I can get back to you asap) Send me any questions.
THE EXPECTATION IS THAT YOU ARE CREATING ALL HOUR. DO NOT LET OTHER WEBSITES OR YOUR PHONE DISTRACT YOU!
Things to do:
- Take a screenshot (Fn and PrintScreen to copy) WITH THE LAYERS PANEL OPEN and paste it in an email and send ([email protected])
- Upload it to your classroom folder and send me an email that it is complete and in your folder.

The next major project will be largely based on the gradient mesh tool and creating photorealistic objects in Illustrator. In order to get comfortable with the tool, you will practice with 3 small assignments first.
Each assignment has a video tutorial that you can watch first and then do or watch and pause and do as she creates. Your assignment is to create what she creates in each video. Watch and listen carefully as she imparts some good information AND some great shortcuts! Future bellwork questions will be pulled from these tutorials......LISTEN!!
Gradient Mesh Assignment #1 (Create the sphere & rectangle as she does. I'll need to check this for credit in Illustrator (the .ai file) Call me over when it is completed to receive instant credit THEN jpeg it.

Bellwork: Title it, "Touch Type Tool". Watch the 2 min video.
Use the technique on an Artboard with a word of your choosing. Then screenshot it (Printscreen button on keyboard) and paste it into your journal.
Be thinking about pacing this week! I'm looking at planning the next project and need to have an idea of when to roll it out. End of this week? First thing next week?

Take a look at how this technique is used in the real world! The cover of TIME magazine last year. Notice how the face was sectioned into smaller shapes. There are also places of single words as well as places that use phrases or sentences. Take a moment to see how it was composed so that the audience could read it easily.

Bellwork: CHECK SKYWARD! If you see something that is marked as missing, finish it today! OR if it is marked as missing and you have it done.... you have two choices to get credit:
As you work today, stay focused and get as far as you can. Hopefully you are working on your 2nd or 3rd logo by now. If not, kick it into high gear.
If you get stuck, ask for help! There are several experts in the room, including other 2nd year and perhaps 3rd year students in the room.

YOUR GOAL IS TO HAVE AT LEAST TWO LOGOS TO POST ON YOUR BLOG TOMORROW!
IF YOU HAVE ONE OR TWO DONE AND HAVE NOT CREATED A TEXT BASED LOGO, TRY THAT NEXT.
Things to do:
- Take a screenshot (Fn and PrintScreen to copy) WITH THE LAYERS PANEL OPEN and paste it in an email and send ([email protected])
- Upload it to your classroom folder and send me an email that it is complete and in your folder.

Bellwork: Title your entry, "Progress Report"
You are asked to create at least 2 different logos for PLTW Biomedical students so that we have a choice. Your goal is to have 2 OR MORE created and posted to your weebly site by WEDNESDAY so that you can get feedback from fellow 2nd year students in other classes.
How are you doing so far? In your entry, explain where you are in the process and what steps you are going to take in order to make that deadline (stay after, come in at lunch, work on it at home or the college (dual enrollment people), use the 7 day free trial download at home....)

Once he starts creating, you'll see him use tools we know how to use in a much smarter, efficient fashion. Even if you have an idea and have started creating, you don't want to miss this!!! It is well worth it.
Thank you Devonte' for the find :)

Bellwork: Title your entry, "Negative Space Logos"
Go to this LINK and look through the most creative logos that use negative space. Remember, negative space is using empty space as an important part of the design. Many times it can be an optical illusion as your eyes bounce from positive (objects) to negative and back again.
In your entry, screenshot your favorite example of a Negative Space Logo into your journal. (The Fn key plus the Printscreen key to 'copy', then Ctrl + V or right click to paste in your journal.
Explain what is created with positive and what is created with negative space.
Example:
The positive space is a waiter's vest. The negative space is a wine glass.

List at least five places you have been or would like to go.....anywhere in the world......or universe ;)
I know this is interrupting your Type Artboard and questions, but I have to grab what you know now to compare what you learn this year before I teach you any new tricks. Sorry for the jump around.
For your pretest you will:
Create a scene using only Illustrator- (Stuck for ideas, think of things you did over the summer or places you went OR think of a place and do a Google Image search for a PHOTOGRAPH of that destination to use for a reference (not a Live Trace!)
The scene should include:
This is your opportunity to show off your current level of expertise with Illustrator so you are by no means limited to the above bulleted points. You can delve into other areas we studied last year. However, make sure you do your best to demonstrate what you CAN do in these areas.
The file will be saved as an .ai file AND a jpeg and placed in a Pretest folder I'll share with you later this week.
You will have this week to complete it to your satisfaction. Let me know when you are done.
If finished early, return to finish Type Review Artboard, Font questions, weebly site, blog post, or BTS tutorial.

If you haven't done so already, publish your weebly site. I'm checking every day to see if it is live yet. Your goal is to have the site published and your blog post completed and published by Friday. Over the weekend, I will check them and pull together the links so that you can make comments on each other's posts. Both blogging and commenting will become a regular way for you to communicate with each other this year in terms of explaining techniques and getting feedback on your work.EMAIL ME THE URL ADDRESS FOR YOUR SITE IF YOU HAVE NOT DONE SO ALREADY!

Serif, Sans Serif, Script, Novelty, and Dingbats
You will have the same heading across the top: "Preinstalled Fonts" and "Dafont.com"
- Watch video to see how to set up your artboard for your first text assignment. Some of it has been formatted before he starts. Just look at how he organizes it. We did not or will not make a template.(Remember, Option for a Mac = Alt for Windows) Pay close attention to how he separates the layers.
You will have the same headings along the side:

the url address you chose for your site.
2. EMAIL ME THE URL ADDRESS TO YOUR WEEBLY SITE.
Today you will create a blog page on your site if you have not already.
Your first post will include the following (not necessarily in this order) but in paragraph form, a beginning statement, a middle, and an end.
Do not simply list your answers. Use details to support your ideas so your audience gets a clear picture of what you are trying to describe. Think carefully about your spelling and grammar. Use complete sentences and punctuation. This is going public so you want to make sure this is a polished version of your thoughts.
I will give a short demo on how to get the blog page going. In the meantime, you can create your post in a Google Doc then simply copy and paste. Otherwise, you are welcome to research or experiment in the site itself to get going. (Go to Pages then + then blog page)
Include in your post:
1. The link to the tutorial you chose.
2. The exported JPEG from that tutorial. If your colors are off-save
your .ai file as RGB and export a new jpeg.....title it RGB so you
know which is which.
3. Describe in detail what areas or techniques in the tutorial gave you
the most trouble. Also, in order to help others, describe how you
solved the problem. (If the tutorial was breezy for you, describe an
area that might cause others problems with tips how to get through
it.)
4. Describe something new you learned either about the tutorial or
something within this new version of Illustrator that is different from
the way you are used to do that technique.
5. Review the tutorial itself, like a Rotten Tomato review :)

- Was it easy to understand the directions?
- Did you have to modify it a lot? If so, how and where?
- What level of difficulty would you rate this tutorial (Easy, Intermediate, Advanced)?
- How many stars would you give this tutorial? (1 being hard to follow/understand and 4 being easy to follow/understand.)

It was determined on Friday that most people needed at least one more day to finish the tutorial assignment. This means that Tuesday new concepts/assignments will begin. If you finish your tutorial early, choose another one from the page OR search for your own. Be sure to include the link at the bottom of your artboard if you find your own.
Make sure your .ai file AND exported JPEG of your tutorial are in your folder.

Bellwork: Title it, "Tutorial bits" and date it.
What, if anything, have you found in your tutorial that is new, doesn't make sense, or is giving you trouble.
Use the rest of the hour to get as far as you can on the tutorial.
If you happen to finish early, finish setting up your weebly site OR pick a new tutorial and play. (Preferably a technique you don't currently know how to do.)

Bellwork: Illustrator should be on your computers now. It's different with student log-ins. Just log in with Google as it is the same username and password.
Look ahead in your tutorial. With serious focus all hour in the days ahead, determine how many days you think you will need to finish. Put it in your journal.
I will be around to check with you today and will decide when we are moving on.

#2 Making Shapes link
- To refresh your memory in basic Illustrator, you will begin by choosing a tutorial from the link below to follow and create. Do not expect to finish all in one day.
- While I will be teaching you new techniques in small group, there will times when I am teaching 1st year students and cannot immediately come to your aid. Use this time to reacquaint yourself with Illustrator basics, but also to become independent learners.
- If you are stuck, use Adobe Help or Google to find your answer...or ask a fellow 2nd year student. If all else fails, move on to a different area until Design 1 students are independent and I can help you.
