Bellwork: Copy the following tips into your journal.
TIPS TO CONSIDER FOR YOUR MENU:
- Step back from your computer and look at it from a distance. How does it read? Is it balanced? Is it eye catching?
- Watch the edge of your art boards with the text. Keep a healthy margin....don't squish the text right up against the edge. It'll suffocate :-P
- Don't be afraid to have your images break the boundary of the art board and go off the edge. It may help create more 'white space' and give it a more open feel.

Bellwork: Title your entry, "Menu critique warm up"
Copy the following into your journal. Analyze the image below to help you answer the questions.
- Contrast-Where do you see Contrast in this design? Does it need to be edited to be more effective? What would you suggest?
- Repetition- What elements (shapes, colors, fonts, etc.) are repeated in this design in order to unify the whole composition? Does it need to be edited? What would you suggest?
- Alignment- Think grids! Did the designer line up text and images in a way that there are clean lines and organization throughout? Does it need to be edited? What do you suggest?
- Proximity- Is the information grouped/categorized? Are the groups separated by 'white space' to make them look isolated? Does it need to be edited? What would you suggest?
- Color Unity- Does the color scheme match the style of the restaurant?
- Hierarchy of Text- Look for the level one, level two, and level three text. Is the most important information the first thing to catch your eye? How did the artist achieve that? Does it need to be edited? What would you suggest?
When you are done with your Journal Entry, you have three things to do to show me you are ready to move on.....
- You need something to write with....
- Get TWO critique sheets from the register by the window. PUT YOUR NAME AT THE TOP OF BOTH.
- Have your menu illustrator file open on your desktop WHETHER IT IS FINISHED OR NOT!
Remember the criteria for the Menu is:
- Name of the restaurant
- Address and phone number of restaurant
- Types of meals (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Dessert)
- Descriptions of each dish.
- Cost of each dish.
- At least one Illustrator created image for each category. The colors and style of graphic you create should also match the ‘theme’ of your restaurant.

Bellwork: Title your entry, "Article Notes"
Open Modification Argument Article and begin to read. Be ready to discuss whole group. (Check out the comments too!)
Copy and Paste at least two pieces of information from the article OR the comments that you think is interesting enough to share in a discussion. Make sure you understand the context of those facts so that you sound smart if I ask you any questions about it :)
Modification 'Monster' assignment
Choose from one of these three images to use as a basis for a design in Illustrator. You can Pen Trace, Image Trace, or try to recreate it from observation. However, you must change the image enough so that it is no longer recognizable as the original, just changing the fill color or adding gradient is not enough. Keep a key feature and change the rest.
Add/subtract/modify paths, use the pathfinder panel to unite shapes, add effects/textures, rearrange viewpoint, create new/different details, add/subtract/modify features on the creatures, use only the outline, change the space around the creature,......the list of possibilities is HUGE when talking about modifying.
Can you modify it enough so that the artist could not recognize it as his/hers?

Bellwork: Title it, "Levels 1-3"
Copy and paste the following info into your journal AND the blue prompt at the bottom:
- Level One: Generally, your level-one typography will be the most important content or information; this should be the most immediately visible typographic element in your design, most likely a title.
- Level Two: Level-two elements usually help organize your design into sections or group related information together. They shouldn’t stand out as much as your level-one type, but should clearly direct viewers to the different parts of the design and help them navigate it easily, most likely subheadings.
- Level Three: For a text-heavy layout, the level-three typography is generally the meat of the design. This is where the copywriting lives, where you get into the message of your design. It could be long or short — a whole article, a short note, a brief description — but the primary concern for this level is that it’s easy to read, since the font size will likely be somewhat small.
Analyze the example below. (If you get stuck, look at the links posted on 1/15/20.)
List an example of each Level of text found in this poster. Be ready to share your answers in whole group*

Bellwork: Title it "Compound Paths"
Copy and Paste the definition of Compound Paths below:
Instead of a single path outlining the shape, there is also one or more paths inside the shape along the edge of a 'cutout'. Compound paths let you use an object to cut a hole in another object. For example, you can create a doughnut shape from two nested circles. Once you create a compound path, the paths act as grouped objects.

ORIGINALITY - Work that challenges conventions, blurs the boundaries between genres, and shifts notions of how a particular concept or emotion can be expressed. Jurors are encouraged to look for works of art that surprise them and leave a lasting impression
PERSONAL VISION - Work with an authentic and unique point of view and style.
.
TECHNICAL SKILL - Work that uses a technique to advance an original perspective or a personal vision, and show skills being utilized to create something unique, powerful, and innovative. Exhibition of technical skill alone should not be rewarded unless it’s exercised in the service of expressing an idea that is unique, powerful, and innovative and helps to highlight the artist’s vision.

If you get stuck, ask for help! There are several experts in the room at this point.
Otherwise, I am accessible all day through email (I have the app on my phone and my phone is permanently attached to me so I can get back to you asap) Send me any questions.
THE EXPECTATION IS THAT YOU ARE CREATING ALL HOUR. DO NOT LET OTHER WEBSITES OR YOUR PHONE DISTRACT YOU!

Copy and Paste the reminders below into your journal. Creating space and depth in your Christmas design is part of your Design Checklist.
- Objects that are closest to the audience (foreground) are bigger and often near the bottom of the design.
- Objects that are farther back in the design (middle ground and background) are smaller and are placed further up the page in the design....the farther away, the higher it goes.
- Overlapping objects creates the illusion of depth.
- Highlights (from a light source) and shadows (creeping away from the light source) create depth.
- Objects in the background lose saturation of color and detail the farther away it is.

Anchor tip to remember with Gradient Mesh! and Demo
After you have created your basic shape and modified it to fit a section of your design as close as you can with the anchors that came with the basic shape, DON'T ADD ANCHORS TO MODIFY IT FURTHER!! YOU'LL GET TANGLE MESHES. Instead add meshes to your slightly modified basic shape and then adjust those anchors with your direct selection tool to perfect the shape!
Quick demo to illustrate this tip.

YOU'LL GET TANGLE MESHES. Instead add meshes to your slightly modified basic shape and then adjust those anchors with your direct selection tool to perfect the shape!
Quick demo to illustrate this tip.

Remember, your material fee covers 8 prints. After that it is $.25 cents a piece. See me if you're not sure if you paid yet. It's not too late! You can even pay me when the prints come in. (If you have any issues regarding the money, talk to me!)

Challenge: Pick a theme and interpret it. Create a 'turkey' that utilizes the hand in some way. Make it ORIGINAL!
Here is a hand you can use to trace, facing left or right....OR you could take a picture of your own hand....with school appropriate gestures, of course.
(Remember to PLACE the jpeg on your artboard so you don't lose your swatches. If you double click on the layer, make it a template, then add a new layer to trace on, it will make your life easier.)

Demonstration/Explanation of Pen Tool 4 Artboards Assignment
In order to get completely comfortable with the Pen tool, we will do a series of small assignments. These assignments are meant to get you familiar with the tool, learn all of it's shortcuts, and prepare you for the next creative project. BEWARE: The pen tool can get frustrating so we are going to take it slow! Be patient with yourself as it doesn't work as a pencil or paintbrush. It can feel quirky at first.
To begin, download the file below. It has FOUR different assignments on one artboard. You HAVE to watch the video in order to learn the shortcuts or you're doomed! Information from the video will show up in future bell works and be critical to your success in future assignments and projects!

- Download the file.
- Watch the video to a good stopping point...at the end of a row, at the end of a 'page', it's up to you. DO NOT TRY TO WATCH THE WHOLE VIDEO IN ONE SITTING! Your brain will cramp, your eyes will glaze, and you won't remember anything.
- Make sure you save occasionally and look to where it is saving to....you don't want to have to start ALL over again. If you do not finish in one day, check to see what the time stamp is on the video before you exit so that you can pick up in the same spot tomorrow.
- When you have completed all 4 'pages' call me over for credit. I WANT TO SEE THIS AS AN .AI FILE! This is a one hundred point assignment! IF YOU SAVE IT AS A JPEG AND CHECKMARK 'USE ARTBOARDS', IT WILL ONLY SAVE THE FIRST PAGE!!! DO NOT CHECK 'USE ARTBOARDS' WHEN YOU EXPORT AS A JPEG!!!

Bellwork: CHECK SKYWARD! If you see something that is marked as missing, finish it today! OR if it is marked as missing and you have it done....
You have two choices to get credit today:
As you work today, stay focused and get as far as you can. Hopefully you are finished with your project by now and waiting for critiques. If not, kick it into high gear. If you've been critiques, edit/revise, then place BOTH the .ai and the jpeg in your folder and turn in the paper rubric to the guest teacher (extras on front table by bathroom pass).
Things to do: (Zeros go in this weekend for #'s 2-5. Finish and get credit today when I'm gone using the steps above in bellwork.)
You have two choices to get credit today:
- Take a screenshot (Fn and PrintScreen to copy) WITH THE LAYERS PANEL OPEN and paste it in an email and send ([email protected])
- Upload it to your classroom folder and send me an email that it is complete and in your folder.

Open your Google Journal Doc and title it "Blending Words"
Screenshot it and paste into your journal.
Things to do:
- Open your Illustrator File and type two words that relate to each other in some way. (Some fonts don't play nice, so if your blend doesn't work, you may have to try a different one.)
- Use the Blending tool to make the 'blend' into each other. Feel free to play with stroke color too! (Tips for success....do not make the words in the same text box or in a text box at all. Simply click on the artboard with the Text tool. Make sure BOTH are selected. Make sure you are on "Specified steps or distance". Ctrl + Alt + B is the keyboard shortcut for Blend > Make.)

How would you incorporate those things into a design that would capture the attention of your audience for a while?
Remember, you have to include at least one gradient and at least two patterns while maintaining Unity in your design. Keep it balanced and use modified shapes- See the Design Checklist and Rubric to make sure you are including all the important aspects of this project.
All Done???
Once you have changed each blend mode, File >Export > Export As > JPEG (check Use Artboards) > Maximum Quality > 300 ppi. Insert the JPEG into your Journal.

Bellwork: CHECK SKYWARD! If you see something that is marked as missing, finish it today! OR if it is marked as missing and you have it done.... you have two choices to get credit:
As you work today, stay focused and get as far as you can. Hopefully you are all into your project by now. If not, kick it into high gear.
If you get stuck, ask for help! There are several experts in the room, including 2nd year and perhaps 3rd year students in the room. They have all done what you are doing and can get you passed the problem.
Last week in the marking period! Make sure you make time to finish missing assignments. The lab is available before/after school and, if there is an open computer, during lunch. I have A lunch. You are welcome to come down.

- Explanation of Boutique Assignment
- YOUR BOUTIQUE SALE AD will NOT look exactly like the examples. How can you use what you know about Asymmetrical Balance in a Design to make the flyer look interesting? Placement, Font, Color will play a big role in this. Think Variety of sizes. You don't want your paper to look like wallpaper, all the same sized symbols and font. Which symbols and font should be bigger and capture more attention and which could be smaller? Think balance of visual weight! Distribute the weight using one or more of the techniques we discussed yesterday!

As a group we will review the Syllabus and Expectations.
EASY POINTS NEXT! Don't do it until you hear specific instructions!
You will send Mrs Jones ([email protected]) an empty email from your school gmail account with the subject as, "I have read and understand the syllabus and expectations for Digital Design."
(Just copy and paste the quote)
Turn your monitors off once the email is sent so we can have your undivided attention for a full group discussion of 'The Stolen Scream' and watch new video.
Do an image search for 'Adobe Illustrator Art' or 'Illustrator Artwork' or 'Vector Art'. Look for designs that stand out to you either in technique or as inspiration for your own project. Place AT LEAST FIVE DIFFERENT images on your Journal doc with a copy of the url address below it AND Explain why you chose it....NOT just 'It's cool!' or 'It's pretty'! Be specific about what you like about the design.

Digital Design Pretest-WAIT FOR DEMO!
“Congratulations on your band making it BIG! Now you need to get a cover ready for your band’s debut album. For this Challenge you will be using Photoshop, Illustrator, PowerPoint or Google Slides to create a cover for your Band’s new album. Use the software that you are most comfortable for design.
Album Quickfire Activity (Created by Sean Leahy - MSU MAET Program)
Directions: Open a new Google Doc to take notes. Believe me, you'll forget what you get for results.
1 – Go to Wikipedia. Hit “random”
or click http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random The first random Wikipedia article you get is the name of your band. It can be one of the words from the article title or a couple or all of them....it's up to you. TYPE YOUR BAND NAME IN YOUR JOURNAL SO YOU DON'T FORGET IT!
2 – Go to Phrase Generator.com and select one of the categories to create a random phrase. The last four or five words of the Phrase is the title of your first album. (You can choose from that set of words....your title might be only one or two words...) TYPE YOUR ALBUM NAME IN YOUR SO YOU DON'T FORGET IT!
3 – Go to Unsplash Random Photos or to Pixabay Editor's Choice and
choose a picture to be your album cover photo. SAVE THE IMAGE TO YOUR DESKTOP.
4 – Choose a design program. You are welcome to use Illustrator, Photoshop, or Google Slides or PowerPoint. However, only use a program you can operate without major assistance. If you are not comfortable and/or independent with the Adobe programs, don't use them. You'll get there later. (We may not have them installed yet, check in the startup window.)
5. PAY ATTENTION TO DESIGN !!! This is where you show me your artistic eye before any teaching takes place. Your choice of pics, fonts, colors, and placement will tell me a lot.
6. A Google Folder has been shared with you. When you are done, save your image as a jpeg and upload it to that folder. MAKE SURE YOU TITLE IT "LAST NAME, FIRST NAME"
If you 'starred' your folder, just go to Google Drive and click 'Starred' on the left hand side. If you did not, right click on your folder and 'Add Star'. It will make your life easier :)
Go to your Google Folder for this class and make sure you have :
1. The folder shared with me and labeled Last name, First name.
2. A Google Doc titled "1 Journal" IS IN THE FOLDER. You may not have gotten to this. Take care of it now.
3. Your favorites page is completed with an answer and an image for all ten and it is IN YOUR FOLDER
If you have these things, help direct someone next to you that may need help
OR
if you are one of the many that did not or could not fill out the DIGITAL EXPERIENCE survey from yesterday, do it now. (Link is on yesterday's agenda below.)
Please turn off your monitors when you are ready to move on.
